Phoenix drivers know summer is hot. But there is a difference between an ordinary hot August day and the prolonged extreme heat the Valley is experiencing right now.
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Phoenix metropolitan area through Saturday, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 116°F. The warning includes Central Phoenix, Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, Glendale, the East Valley, Ahwatukee, Queen Creek, Buckeye, Avondale and other communities across Greater Phoenix.
And this isn’t the first stretch of exceptional heat Phoenix has seen this month.
Official National Weather Service climate data from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport recorded highs of 116°F on August 1, 115°F on August 2 and 116°F again on August 3. The average temperature on each of those days was 105°F — about 10 degrees above normal.
For Phoenix drivers, those numbers matter for more than what the thermometer says outside. When a vehicle sits in the Arizona sun, solar energy enters through the glass and heats the seats, dashboard, steering wheel and other surfaces inside the cabin. Those surfaces then radiate heat into the vehicle.

The National Weather Service’s Phoenix office is forecasting another run of temperatures well above 110°F, including a forecast high of 116°F on Wednesday. The agency is warning of Major to Extreme HeatRisk across the region.
